Eastbourne Town wrapped up their 2024/25 Isthmian League South East campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to playoff bound Merstham. Despite a strong defensive performance and several key saves from goalkeeper Chris Winterton, Town were undone by a late goal from Bradley Wilson, who had come on as a half-time substitute and made a decisive impact.

The match kicked off under sunny skies at The Saffrons, with both sides looking to end their seasons on a high. Merstham, already assured of a playoff spot, started brightly and nearly capitalised on a defensive error in the 8th minute, but the chance went begging.

Town’s defence, marshalled by James Waters, stood firm throughout the first half. Waters made a crucial challenge in the 15th minute to deny a clear opportunity for Merstham. Winterton was called into action multiple times, making a series of impressive saves, including a standout double save following a Merstham corner in the 17th minute.

Eastbourne Town grew into the game and registered their first shot on target in the 25th minute, a long range effort comfortably saved by the Merstham keeper. The hosts continued to press, with Town’s No.11 showcasing skill on the flank but lacking the final product.

As the half drew to a close, Merstham’s No.3 struck the post with a header from a well delivered cross, a let off for Town just before the break. The first half ended goalless, with both teams having their moments.

An unusual incident occurred during halftime when the referee sustained an injury and couldn’t continue. One of the assistant referees took over officiating duties, and a qualified individual from the crowd stepped in as the new assistant referee, allowing the match to proceed.

The second half saw Merstham make several substitutions to freshen up their lineup. Town’s No.4 displayed flair and creativity in midfield, but the final touch eluded the hosts. The game was briefly halted in the 60th minute due to a head collision involving Merstham’s No.11, who thankfully was able to continue after treatment.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 82nd minute. A high cross into the box wasn’t dealt with by the Town defence, allowing a Merstham player at the back post to square the ball across goal for Bradley Wilson to tap in from close range.

Eastbourne Town pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, with a free kick opportunity in the 86th minute hitting the wall and a late chance in stoppage time going wide. Despite their efforts, Town couldn’t find a way back into the game.

The match concluded with a 1-0 victory for Merstham, who will carry momentum into the playoffs. Eastbourne Town can take pride in their adamant performance and the strong finish to their season, despite the final day defeat.
